Abstract


A prevalence study was carried out on 35 trigeminal neuralgia patients who had visited the Department of Oral Medicine in PNUH from 1990 to 1994. All the subjects were examined clinically and treated conservatively by means of medication, behavior modification, and TENS.
The obtained results were as follows :
1. Epidemiologically, there was a higher incidence in female, fifties and chronic group.
2. The involved nerve was maxillary branch, mandibular branch,or both of them and the trigger zone was gingiva, tongue, cheek and teeth in order of sequence
3. There was 63 percent of patients who had been treated or treating for neuropsychiatric disorder, rheumatologic disorder, anemia and tuberculosis in sequence
4. There was 51 percent of patients who occurred suddenly or was exacerbated after dental treatment i.e., prosthetic treatment, extraction and endodontic treatment in order
5. While the success rate of conservative therapy was 72 percent, that in acute group was 92 percent and that in chronic group was 59 percent.
